An opossum once did this when my dog came after it. Ever since then, my dog plays opossum whenever she doesn't want to do what she's told. She lays down with her legs out stiff and won't make eye contact. She never did that before meeting the opossum.
Under intense fear, opossums fall into a comatose-like state that can last for hours, long enough to convince any predator that the opossum is dead. Fear causes these animals to emit a corpse-like smell that only adds to their actpic.twitter.com/wFmkveeeAE

I love how it’s not enough to act dead, but it must also smell like a corpse as well. 10 / 10 for going the whole way. Give it up for the humble possum who may be tiny, but is clearly hardcore af.
