In Greek mythology, he was a Giant with many eyes, tasked by Hera to guard a nymph disguised as a white cow, whom Zeus wanted to sleep with. Zeus sent Hermes to kill him. Once slain, Hera took Argus' eyes and put them in the tail of a peacock.
