Under what circumstances would it choose to swim instead of fly, though?

I'm sorry, it was just too easy a response 😁 But apparently they do it out of necessity rather than choice, if they've miscalculated a landing or are retrieving dropped food:https://www.earthtouchnews.com/natural-world/animal-behaviour/newsflash-bats-can-swim-and-theyre-surprisingly-good-at-it/ …

If someone is a biologist: is this just the standard flight movement that sort of works in water too, or is it a fundamentally different type of locomotion?

No, it is swimming because it can't get out of the water...they can't fly out of water

Yeah got that - I was wondering about whether it's just "flying" in the water or if it has a separate locomotion behaviour adapted to each medium

its a different locomotion pattern, it got half the wing folded/relaxed n its using the thumb area to provoke a horizontal movement on the folded wing part, while flying is stretching the arm n pulling it down in a vertical movement

Cool, thank you! Yeah I can see that the wing is more folded back but thought maybe that was just water friction pushing it rather than a deliberate movement. But yeah now that you're pointing things out - totally different

Aw jeez. All right. Bats can swim. Well, at least piranhas can’t fly! Right? They can’t. We KNOW that. That, that’s definitely not possible.

*Narrator voice* And it was precisely in that moment that he lost control of his bowels at the exact same time as he shrieked in fear. Years later a therapist would ask him, why? Why did he divorce his wife and lose everything? He would answer simply, “yes, bats can swim.” 😱
