Also good ol' Gertie here was actually part of a stage show where Winsor would "order" Gertie to do things while the animation looped and Gertie would do it (or disobey). It's obvious now how it worked, but at the time is was utterly mind-blowing

It’s astonishing just how good this is. Really solid drawing (including the traced-back bg) and great timing too. He was light years ahead of his time.

I'm a way it reminds me of "Bambi Meets Godzilla". I wish I could step back to 1914 and experience the wonder of this film in a theater with everyone. Awesome film!

My favorite animation that's old. At the time folks were doing rubber hose n stuff, Winsor out there making very ambitious animations before proper techniques were developed. He even inspired Walt Disney to take animation to what it became
