In the 1800s, wealthy British landowners commissioned exaggerated paintings of their livestock as a symbol of wealth and status. Often, the animals were painted with large rectangular bodiespic.twitter.com/FK0cgI4b9J

The large rectangular bodies were the truth. Those animals were what we now call heritage breeds, and at the time were bred for optimal feed conversion (into meat or milk) on *pasture* and *forage*. It's a different physiology than modern breeds being optimized on grain.

Sure, some paintings of livestock might be somewhat exaggerated, but not anywhere near all of them, and not to the extent you'd think. @TheMERL, do you have more info to add here?
