The Cottingley Fairies, photos taken by two cousins Frances Griffiths and Elsie Wright between 1917 and 1920 near Bradford in England. Many people at the time, including Arthur Conan Doyle, believed the fairies were real. The fairies were, in fact, paper cutoutspic.twitter.com/GOwnzIPWm5

I always loved this story because the creator of the world's greatest detective was fooled by little girls with cutouts on hat pins.

Poor Conan Doyle, he was so utterly taken with the idea.

It's so obvious now that they're fake, but I guess in those days it was easier to take people in. Arthur Conan Doyle was apparently really big on the idea of fairies and other mystical and magical things, he truly wanted to believe.

There's a couple of good films about the story.

Not only that, but the fairies were modelled after illustrations from Princess Mary's Gift Book, the introduction to which was written by none other than Arthur Conan Doyle.

Oof. My mum loves the pics so I wondered how much they'd go for, but that is waaaaay too much

Maybe their ability to suspend belief in reality is what made their books so good?
