Wasn’t this the film that inspired the Joker, if I’m not mistaken?

for all of you interested in Veidt's resemblance to the Joker: that aspect of the movie is fascinating & it leaves one thinking about how the Joker is the villain though influenced by this movie. It kind of shows a Jokeresque character as a sympathetic hero, not as the villain.

That being said, maybe 41Strange would do us the pleasure of contrasting the image above with the evil court jester, Barkilphedro, from the same film! (most of the other villains in the movie are either beautiful (like the Baclanova character) or ridiculous caricatures).

very strange movie, but one that utilized what the producers of the film learned from Chaney's movies, specifically Phantom of the Opera and Hunchback of Notre Dame (also based on a Hugo novel), esp. in terms of make-up effects and about audience sympathy for freakish heroes.

in the Man Who Laughs, Gwynplaine, (pictured above), is the swashbuckling /hero/ of the film, whereas in the earlier films, the grotesque, but most interesting characters are Eric the Phantom (unquestionably still "the villain") and Quasimodo the Hunchback (an "anti-hero").

anyway, it's a very good, interesting, movie, and Veidt's performance is arguably the best of the three (no easy task). i was lucky enough to see it on the big screen for my first time after being fascinated with stills from it in a book about horror movies i saw as a child.
