The scene where Ymir hatches might be my favorite bit of stop motion ever.

It's my favorite of his creatures. So much personality! Poor thing just wants to be left alone, but noooooo....pic.twitter.com/CcCDKiPTPO

The face, primarily the jowls, make me wonder if the head design wasn't used as inspiration for his Kraken design decades later.

I much prefer top-notch stop motion over CGI.

It might be primitive to most modern effects, but it's still a lot more believable than the CGI garbage that dominates films today, where the creatures look like they just stepped out of a video game. I love Harryhausen and I love old school effects in general.

Ray Harryhausen’s brilliant stop motion photography is more brilliant than anything I’ve ever seen done in CGI. & for some odd reason , more realistic.

I just realized the similarities to the Kraken in Clash Of The Titanspic.twitter.com/cwQ8D147s4

Ymir also has the same roar (and I suspect much of the same 'skeleton') as the cyclops from 7th Voyage. It was a breakthrough moment for Harryhausen (my interpretation) and he kept revisiting it.

Interesting.. I’ve always been a fan of his work but I’ve never looked deeper into his career - I have something new to pass the time
