John Carpenters The Thing was horrifying to my child self, but nowadays it just blows my mind how good the practical effects were on the different monsters, the dog one is especially gruesome, its like nightmares brought to life

"The poster for The Thing is regarded ... as one of the most striking and visually impressive ever released. Which is impressive when you realise that the guy who painted it had no idea what the movie was about and that he painted it in a single evening."

That was absolutely normal in graphic design before computers – paint still wet, courier tapping feet waiting, one more thing to do and it’s ready, no wait, two more. There really was no other way. What, you think everything was 100% complete, sat back relaxed, then we phoned?
-
Been there, done that, more times than I want to remember. One of the things I love about painting digitally - we don't have to worry about that any more.

Also, when it comes to movie posters, Struzan is The Man! Or one of them, anyway, along with Bob Peak. Wish there was more illustration in movie posters these days.

The Thing is the baseplate for what horror movies should aim for. It has all the elements - isolation, monsters, body horror, paranoia, head spiders.

The downward tilt of that hand.....

genius -
Could you explain the downward tilt? Ive always been curious about The Thing but ive never dared to watch it
-
It has nothing to do with the film itself really... but the film is certainly well worth venturing into!!!

I imagine he made it with stencils and spray , I wonder how he made it so fast with all the layers of gradients and shapes it has
-
i dont know if working with spray then, was so easy than in our days. my grandfather used to paint with stencils and its very tricky
-
I learned airbrushing on the job in a studio. One of my co-workers was an old Argentinian immigrant who half the time didn't bother with stencils or frisket, but used his hand to mask. The guy was amazingly good, and amazingly fast and precise.
-
You’re right it’s airbrush , forgot about that one
