My grandmother is the lady who does the Lion’s nails in the Emerald City musical number. She had some great stories about working on that film.

could you share some?

She often talked about how everyone was so eager and willing to work. Many were still reeling from the depression, which the studio exploited to a great degree. 18-20 hour days were the norm, with vocal practices mixed in, when the cameras weren't rolling.
-
You didn't dare share that you were uncomfortable or that the costumes were making you incredibly hot, as there was a line of people around the block looking for any kind of paycheck. This was long before organized studio labor, of course.
-
She kept up with a few of her cast-mates for quite some time. Many of them were also contract people in other films, so you'll be able to recognize many of them in other popular films. Here's her IMDB, if you're interested in her other appearances.https://www.imdb.com/name/nm1074584/

Had the steam been CGI, they wouldn't have gotten the realistic reaction from the dog.
