        Funnily enough, the neighborhood in Bogotá, Colombia where I live is right on the "royal road" which was usually muddy. The neighborhood is called Chapinero, and the name is derived from the shoes.

        The streets were used as toilets and the canals would overflow at times, so keeping ladies feet out of all that was why these were made. They probably fell over a lot !!!
