In Slavic Mythology, the Domovoi is a house spirit who lives in sheds, under floorboards, or in the stove and acts as a watchman. Don’t offend him or he may smother you in your sleep at nightpic.twitter.com/1nyCjth0Yr

It is said that the Domovoi are going to bring you bad luck if you are whistling inside the house. They seem to hate the sound.

My grandfather forbade me whistling in the house, but never said why. I’ve never heard of Domovoi (the name doesn’t seem Polish), but that must be the superstition behind it.

Exactly. The belief in Domovoi comes from Russian folklore and exists in all of the former USSR, as far as I know. I don't know how they are called in Poland. I think your grandfather could have come from a place where Russian/Byellorussian/Ukrainian and Polish culture mixed.

I checked on Wikipedia. His (the spirit) name is ”ubożę” in Polish (never heard of it either). He (my grandfather) might not even know why whistling was forbidden - it just was.

i remember my grandma leaving some candies or a plate of milk in the house and it had to stay during the night so Domovoi can get a treat and be kind to the family

Never, never wise, to offend your domovoi. They are some times depicted as having cats around them, as they are able to see spirits and usually get along rather well... 🤓

It is said that you can wake up at night because of a domovoi sitting on your chest. In this case you should ask him "for good or for evil?" and he will tell you. My grandmother said that it happened to her before the WWII, and he told her that evil things will happen.

I love that first pic by the way. GW used it in the Slavictype Spirits article for WFRP back in the 80s.

I keep forgetting you're in the US. GW = Games Workshop and WFRP = Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay. Just in case.
