I like how Japanese folklore ranges from something simple like "an ogre" to "I dunno, a radish with spider legs that can control time"
We in Japan have something called Tsukumogami which is based on the belief that any object will come to possess a spirit (and thus become a sort of god or yokai) so basically we can make anything into a monster or god!
But what sort of hallucinogens did you have in the feudal era?
We don't need hallucinogens, it comes to us naturally and its in our heritage!
