In Japanese folklore, "Makuragaeshi" is a trickster spirit notorious for moving pillows while people sleep. Anyone who sees a Makuragaeshi loses consciousness, after which the Makuragaeshi steals your soul, leaving you deadpic.twitter.com/j7vOeYcrbR

Often with these folktales, it starts with something innocuous (pillow switching).. but then it turns into horrific (death). The wall between these extremes is as thick and negotiable as mist.

In Heian-period it was believed that soul leaves its body while sleeping. Makuragaeshi flipping the pillow has the connotation of taking the person a step closer to death. Once spotted they just take away the floating spirit. What they do with it is not specified.

True, later the whole death part kinda went away. Leaving this mischievous youkai flipping pillows just for the sake of it... feel kind of lonely doesn't it?
