I didn’t realize that the original designs for Godzilla/Gojira were based so strongly on the classical look of Seiryū / Qinglong dragons. Or am I completely imagining the resemblance?

The influence may have been from the artists. They were told he was going to be a mutant dinosaur from the sea with back spines that shoots atomic fire and that was about it.

Those designs really are a lot more traditional than the suit turned out to be. I actually like how strange and undefinable the early Godzilla was.

The first Gojira was textured in a manner to resemble the scars of survivors from the bombs. And was a mixture of a stegosaurus and tyrannosaurus. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=yfSARjZ0OXc … Here’s a decent video of the original suit.

I’ve heard that. Those suits are beautiful in a dreamlike way. The original film was as much a metaphor on the post-war psyche as Hiroshima, Mon Amour.

Wonder what took the Japanese so long? Using storyboards in Hollywood started as far back as the silent era. By the 30s, it was being used by Disney for everything. #shitdrummedintoyourbrainatNYUcirca1976

But storyboard history pre-dates WW2 here in the USA, so could be just lack of knowledge.
