In Throne of Blood (1957) Akira Kurosawa hired skilled archers and had them shoot real arrows at Toshirô Mifune. Mifune wore protective boards underneath his costume to ensure that the arrows wouldn't penetrate his fleshpic.twitter.com/beyIig1ceC

Short video (3 minutes) with the prop master talking about how they shot the scene. Very cool.https://www.youtube.com/watch?time_continue=179&v=W5MtUiYxBiY …

I'm guessing Mifune's terror in that shot isn't entirely due to him acting.

That's one of the long-kept secret of getting actors to look genuinely terrified: genuinely terrify them.

Don't they use hollowed out arrows and wires connected to the walls in situations like this?

Arrows guided by wires to his armor, so they were guarenteed to hit the boards, with phonograph needle tips to lessen the penetration, - but they were still fired by archers.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W5MtUiYxBiY …

Also all the rest of the arrows were not guided. Just needed to clarify that point.

This proves it. Jared Leto is a coward who is not truly dedicated to method acting unless he lets me shoot arrows at him while he’s dressed as the joker.

I've heard this fact before but it never ceases to amaze. Mifune was one dedicated actor. Also, Throne of Blood, in my opinion, is the very best film adaptation of Macbeth.
