yes it is, i grew up as a child with this book.

the kid sucking his thumb story is the worst as the poor thing gets his thumb cut off! Definitely won't have stuff like this in kid's books today

England: We have a kid's novel about kids (visiting a chocolate factory) who misbehave and receive weird over-the-top punishments... Germany: Hold my beer.

The Tiger Lillies has an album based off the book. It is incredibly twisted.
-
There is also a play based on those stories called «Shockheaded Peter», and when I saw it in London in 2002, the Tiger Lillies did the music.
-
I have the album. I have seen the Tiger Lillies live in Portland Oregon. Very cool show. Would have loved to see the stage version.

First saw this as a kid when visiting my grandparents in Germany. It was even weirder not understanding the language and trying to figure out was happening from the pictures.

I'm german, so I had this as a kid. And it's beautifully macabre. Like the boy who's cruel to animals and getting mauled by a dog or the boy who doesn't want to eat his soup and starves to death.
-
This terrified me as a kid. He's just wasting away and dies. You bet that I always ate my soup.pic.twitter.com/LjLMemowWz
