I'd risk bodily injury to defend a friend or neighbor, but I'm not going to risk myself for $150 worth of property from a company that doesn't care if I live or die

It's not 150$ worth of property belonging to a company- it's three bystanders subtly enforcing a belief system that says that other people's things and priorities never matter to us.

It isn’t other people’s things and priorities, it’s a faceless corporation’s things and priorities. Just because we stood by and allowed filthy rich assholes to pretend corporations are people for legal purposes doesn’t mean it’s true or that anybody fucking cares

Using faceless as a justification doesn't insulate from the fact that those corporations are composed of the investments of tens of thousands of shareholders, and those people are people in our society too. If we want a society with less theft we need to oppose all theft.

but we don’t oppose all theft because most of it doesn’t look like a guy smashing and grabbing. I’m not getting bent out of shape about this when the wealthy have been stealing from the working class to total silence for my entire lifetime

Is the bad part of theft the smash and grab? No! It's the taking that which belongs to someone else. Refusing to care about evil when it doesn't impact you, or when it harms someone you don't like, is what got us here. We must all stand up for a moral society.

https://twitter.com/Eyescapesoft/status/1404879996347428864 … This is as morally incoherent as the 13th doctor saying "don't shoot the bad guy- guns are immoral" and then instead locking the baddie in a room to starve to death. It's as if the only bad thing about theft is the optics.

That is the only bad thing about theft to a lot of people, maybe even most people. If you and I were sitting around a table conceiving of a moral framework for the perfect society, we would be in total agreement. Sadly, this is the society we have and I’ll judge it on those terms

"this is the society we have and I'll judge it on those terms" would have been a-okay with slavery. Holy cow. We have to draw moral lines, regardless of what "most people" think. If you think that the only bad thing about theft is the violence of the act, you're wrong.

My point is, I'm supportive of moral lines when consistent. Our entire society is based on murder and theft on a massive scale that we all pretend isn't happening right in front of us so I don't care if some kid lifted some shit from Walgreens while that's going on

Por que no los dos? For real though- why not care about both? Society's moral state creates the overall behavior of the larger systems- we change the direction of the boat by changing all of our individual actions in the little areas where we CAN make a difference.
