Yeah I remember the 'we're removing annotations that are on videos because no-one uses them anymore' announcement, despite the fact they disabled people from adding or editing them in the first place...

I'd like to think it was because it always managed to recommend at least one channel you absolutely despised and would never want to signal-boost but couldn't remove without just disabling the feature. I mean it won't be because this is YouTube but y'know...

Same reason they removed the ability to play videos on the mobile version with the screen off years ago. So they could sell it back to you
