a better solution to the lovecraft thing would be Umheimlichkeit, “uncanniness”, which is the actual essence of the original “sanity” mechanic.

I used to know this 'nam vet line cook (he would bring food to us "kids" when his shift got out) who was a little off most of the time, but once he was into his cups was one of the most unsettling people I've ever been around.

Like he presented as a long haired hippy, and some part of him was clearly trying to be postive, but there was a nihilistic undercurrent he couldn't always overcome, and i thin the cognitive dissonance would just shut him down sometimes.
