why can't American transit systems schedule people in a way which obviates bathroom breaks, idgi never heard of this being a problem in Japan--whereas during my bus commute I routinely have to hang out next to an empty bus while the driver runs to the bathroomhttps://twitter.com/joelmsiegel/status/997487650897645568 …

it's normally just irritating--the bus pulls into the terminal, lets all the passengers out, but then the driver shuts the doors in the face of everyone waiting to board, leaves us standing there for 5~10 minutes, and then returns (sometimes AFTER we were meant to depart)

but in the winter it can be excruciating, and probably dangerous to elderly or otherwise vulnerable passengers--strong winds, icy air, etc etc

I'm assuming it means drivers are scheduled for too long a block of time, and that a system of frequent changeovers with relief drivers could avoid the problem--but I don't know if that's how it's actually done in Japan, and such an approach sounds very labor intensive...

Could be long scheduled times but also poorly designed termini with distant/non-existent crew washroom facilities

I'm sure the design doesn't help, but I'm talking about eliminating the need for bathroom breaks during driving time *period*--how can that be accomplished?

Without new tech tho--I'm very interested in exactly how they approach this issue in Japan bc I've never heard of a driver stopping for a bathroom break mid-shift

It's a good question though. I wonder how much it has to do with average run times of North American bus routes. Are they longer because they're more likely to be circuitous? Meaning you need more drivers to serve the same amount of people, and don't have extra labour capacity.

yes, I definitely think this is getting close to the culprit--which, unfortunately, is why I'm not sure there's much that can be done about it

Hmm. We did some great work a few years ago here straightening out some of our stupidest milk run bus routes. I never thought about whether or not that impacted frequency of driver pit stops.
