Rome had the same hubris. Societies rise and then fall, and the U.S. is no exception. Since the problem is complex, no one solution (such as not over-extending infrastructure) will solve it.

Yes my reply wasn't entirely serious, but briefly: - either there's no way we could be here in 1000 years anyway so no harm in rationalizing our expenses, or - we *could* be here in 1000 years and reducing our overextension is a good way to further that outcome
