so after this massive wealth transfer from the public to landowners my guess is the next step is no one who isn't rich can afford a car, ending traffic

Car ownership is a concrete benefit in almost all circumstances, including where transit and walkability are both excellent--let's get transit and walkability right and then let people figure out car ownership for themselves

Oversized streets, on the other hand, are costly and make life more difficult even for car owners--nobody benefits there
