I occasionally talk about the ravages of the heroin epidemic out here in rural Massachusetts--but I think heroin addicts are just the tip of the iceberg. It's not really an opiate crisis we have, IT IS A BOREDOM CRISIS, a devastating lack of MORALE and will to live!
People want things to DO with their time, both productive things and recreational things, and they are trapped by the double bind of deepening stagnation and car dependence!
Economic stagnation makes productive activity harder and harder to come by--you're left with two choices; either stay and live on benefits, or try to leave (not easy when you have no money!). Car dependence means most recreation is impractical to anyone who can't afford a car.
No silver bullets to fix this, I'm afraid! We're in the position of needing to fight on several fronts at a time: - Economic gardening - Road streamlining - Zoning overhaul - Transit development ...and many other areas which I am forgetting or passing over for now.
