The most important goal is to maintain domestic economic prosperity--to "do things here" as far as possible, relying on outside world mostly for: - locally unobtainable resources - goods uneconomical to produce locally - new goods and ideas; new ways to produce old goods
So, while the local economy is the top priority, external trade is still indispensable--the emphasis is on oceangoing trade at the "home ports" along the Gulf of Maine, of which Boston is the most important and developed.
Some maritime trade will make more sense from the ports along the St Lawrence Seaway, eg trade with the Great Lakes area, parts of northern Europe, and maybe someday via the NW Passage. Some trade is also bound to go through NYC
Overland trade by road and rail will use a variety of corridors, but two are particularly developed and important: from Boston, through Albany and central NY, beyond to the Midwest--and from Boston, through CT and across the Hudson, then towards PA and the South
Overland access to the Canadian interior goes via Montreal and Quebec City. Domestic trade roughly falls into three categories: - Shore-to-Shore - Interior-to-Shore - Interior-to-Interior Shore-to-shore follows the most consistent routes; interior-to-interior the most various
The two most critical shore-to-shore corridors are those connecting Boston and Montreal (the "home ports" with the STL Seaway), and the Hudson/Champlain canal corridor
