The only truly FREE way to get around is by walking! If you want to help the poor--if you want people of any class to be able to spend less getting around--then walking must be the default, the foundation on which the superstructure of vehicular transport is built!

The really hard aspect for the American context is the scale of US cities - some of which have a sprawl many times the size of equivalantly populated European cities oriented around bicycles, pedestrians and public transport.

Yes, but this is just a roundabout way of saying "getting around American cities costs more" which only exacerbates the consequences of not adequately charging for transit
