My experience with international travel, very approximately speaking, boils down to this: - First world countries suck bc too expensive - Third world countries suck bc too dirty & risky Japan somehow manages to be first world AND very cheap (except, ofc, for the flight!)
There are tons of countries I want to visit but when it gets to the point of putting money down on plane tickets......at any given point in time there is no country that I'd *rather* visit than Japan
How much Japanese did you learn before taking the trip? I'd love to visit foreign countries, but the language barrier seems like it'd be a big hurdle. I'd always be afraid of not knowing enough.
I've known some Japanese for a while--not really conversational but just enough to make it work
So you can mostly get by with a basic understanding, at least in Japan? That's good to know.
yeah, they usually know at least a little English, and lots of signs are in English too
