My experience with international travel, very approximately speaking, boils down to this: - First world countries suck bc too expensive - Third world countries suck bc too dirty & risky Japan somehow manages to be first world AND very cheap (except, ofc, for the flight!)

There are tons of countries I want to visit but when it gets to the point of putting money down on plane tickets......at any given point in time there is no country that I'd *rather* visit than Japan

They are hit or miss...what I look for is: - not too brightly lit - smoking section, if present, is walled off - mats > recliners - shower You can usually get a spot with all of the above for about $12~15 a night in the sticks or $20~25 a night in the city

yes, last time I went to a first-world country that wasn't Japan I didn't pay for *any* lodging, staying with family instead....but still

Interesting, most of the time I hear it's expensive there, especially after a week. That's good to know.

depends a little on what sort of sleeping/eating conditions you'll tolerate and what you want to do during the day, but ya Japan can be insanely cheap

Try Korea alongside your next J trip. The trains are not as sumptuous, but the cost is lower.

It's a phonetic alphabet, learnable in a day, similar grammar too. Also blazingly fast and free internet abounds. But indoor smoking banned

The ferry is cheap and there are lots of low cost flight options too. But yeah Japan is always splendid. Korea's just an easy side trip.
