yes why don't the factories hire the scab labor AND retain the existing labor while paying both more than before, that sounds extremely tenable

      1) refugees are not "scab labor" and 2) it's perfectly tenable if demand for what the factory produces is growing

fascinating what do you call it when people won't work jobs for a given pay rate so cheaper workers get brought in from elsewhere to do the job

granted that refugees qua refugees are not scab labor, but once they are being deliberately sought after to depress labor costs, well....

anyway, seems relevant to the question of bringing in refugee labor that unemployment rates are low low low

The article says right off the bat that unemployment rates are higher than they have been (which is SUPPOSED to be the cue to pay more)

Employers should absolutely pay more! But when unemployment rates are this low, they *also* need to look at ways to expand the labor force (or make their existing workforce more productive)

What part of "unemployment rates are not low" are you missing here

"chorus of complaints about worker shortages… have trouble retaining workers even when the jobless rate is well above its historically low level of 4.1 percent… Reducing that churn has become harder as the unemployment rate has dropped"

The whole dang article is about how labor markets are tight!

"Of course they might, if the pay were good enough." The whole dang article is about how they are trying to weasel out of higher wages
