This type of vague self identification is probably more common than people think. He has reasonable problems with dominant society and "socialism" is the only alternative he's familiar with so he goes with it. The terms become way less helpful in these circumstances.

Agreed. Also partly why a socialist state has historically been at odds with Christianity, because the former replaces the latter as something to worship.
