Tokyo area also has: - 48 operators - 2,210 stations (a bit high, bc stations are counted again for each operator) - 40 million daily trips (same disclaimer) - 14.6 billion annual trips (etc) ...and that still only accounts for 30% of travel in the region!https://twitter.com/devonzuegel/status/979790266906234880 …

I would love to quote comparable figures for Boston or NYC, but most data that I find is only concerned with commutes to work--what a stupid obsession! Is there anyone out there whose only travel is during their commute?

It's cause that's what the census measures. Of course not shocking that a stat that's most useful to middle class abled-bodied men is emphasized, ignoring children, students, disabled, retired, stay a time home parents etc.

the *kind* of people who commute to work is diverse enough (and I'd be very surprised if it's mostly middle class) this measure is stupid more because it excludes many kinds of travel *made by the working population* than because it ignores travel by those who don't work

It's also stupid cause you can only give one option, so doesn't fully reflect people who use different modes on any given day, or have multi-modal commutes. (I.e. If I walk 15 minutes for a 10 minute train ride, which single mode did I use?)

forreal! this is a shortcoming of most transport surveys though (I'm guessing the Tokyo one earlier way undercounted bus trips for the reason you describe)
