@380kmh @grescoe this is the legroom. I'm no more than 6 feet and I can't fit my knees into that.pic.twitter.com/Ogi4D4bR0m

yeah I like legroom on intercity journeys so I'm def ok with long seats on them--lots of long-distance trains in Japan have both so you can take your pick (also Peterboro to Brighton via London is very much a "metro" journey, albeit a long one)pic.twitter.com/f0qt7sWbQI
That's quite a nice layout. Some of the trains that were just removed from the Peterborough route had a couple of longitudinal benches, but the windows were too high up to get a good view.
Shonan-Shinjuku and Ueno-Tokyo services in Tokyo cover distances in excess of 125 miles and are almost entirely longitudinal seats. Bear in mind also that only a tiny fraction of the ridership will be going all the way from end to end!
Partly it's culture; we would only consider "metro" to be within London's suburbs. Thameslink would be considered "outer suburban" and would, up until about 10 years ago, have got more comfortable trains. But operators aren't incentivised to do this!
