For the same reason, high speed rail really isn't a fix to most transportation problems we face here (tho it has a more useful niche than hyperloop, and has at least been shown to work all over the world), which tend to be at the *intra* metropolitan level

What exactly IS the main transportation problem here? The best summary I can think of right now is "wide roads and spaced-out buildings inflate our infrastructure costs per capita *and* our miles traveled per capita, encouraging cheap infrastructure while exacerbating congestion"
