New England agriculture couldn't compete with Ohio agriculture when that came into full swing--we all got into manufacturing instead. AFAIK Canada was happy to stick to raw material exports instead of heavy industry (until fairly recently)

Massachusetts used to be completely deforested, all land being used for pasture, crops, or orchards--now we're blanketed in trees again

eg. I know there's good soil here in the Pioneer Valley bc it's a former lakebed (so lots of silt was able to accumulate over a long time); consequently it's still viable for agriculture in spite of competition from out west
