a couple of thoughts: while I agree with a lot of the sentiments addressed in the DSA-LA letter, opposing a bill that would reduce the prevalence of single-family zoning and facilitate the construction of new housing is not a great position for a socialist group to take

first–so long as major cities are creating jobs and attracting new residents without building the appropriate amount of housing, the people with more money will be able to outbid the people with less money. restricting the housing supply will not stifle this demand.

second–the promotion of urban density should be a major socialist goal. sprawl keeps people trapped in car-dependent lifestyles, which are alienating, costly and environmentally destructive. SB827's facilitation of housing development around transit would allow more people...

third–opposing SB827, even w/ wiener's amendments that strengthen tenant protections, is essentially a defense of the status quo, i.e. single-family residential zoning. R1 zoning has historically been used to keep areas wealthy + white, which socialists should oppose on principle

finally–SB827 is no silver bullet for housing justice (and makes no claims to be). but it's already managed to drastically shift the overton window w/r/t housing policy, and if it passes, it'll ultimately help a lot of ppl + open the door for even more radical housing solutions
