I will never (ever) romanticize New York City. I despise the place and a lot of what it stands for vis-a-vis cities in general. That scammer shithole has done more damage to the American concept of "what a city is" than any other. But I will certainly romanticize cities!

The thing that you must remember is that New York is just one way to build a city, one way to live in a city. Even within the USA, there are many other ways--let alone outside it!

Even with that said, it may be that cities aren't for you...but you shouldn't leap to that conclusion just because you hated New York. New York is awful! There's plenty of money to be made there, but it's just not worth it, imo

Good to know (tho I wouldn't want to peg transit funding to highway use...), it doesn't surprise me that some ppl like driving to work but I would really prefer if there were some viable options for the rest of us

for the nth time widely available high-quality public transit just increases the number of trips people can take--the roads will still be full the solution you're looking for is extortionate fees for driving on certain roads to keep plebs off them
-
the solution works by reducing the number of trips people can take and will not (on its own) particularly get more people into transit--it'll just get them off highways

Not having to own a car except if you want one is the #1 feature of living here. By a laughably wide margin.
