Getting to points C thru Z is a good reason to own a car--just like the overwhelming number of people going between A and B is a good reason to have a railway between them. People who make themselves partisans for cars typically think in terms of one-mode-for-everythinghttps://twitter.com/drethelin/status/976167346523049985 …

As I never tire of mentioning: it is not a coincidence that the foremost country for railways is also one of the foremost manufacturers of automobiles! Having railways--like having walkable streets or cars--is all about ADDING to the choices people have for getting around.

Also, trains and walkability make the streets less crowded and more fun to drive.

debatable...efforts to evangelize trains on the grounds that they'll make driving easier are misguided at best (the point is to make NOT DRIVING easier) and dishonest at worst (I don't know any city which has solved traffic congestion thru mass transit)

Good point, but car congestion cant really be solved, since the amt of cars expands to fill the roads. You cant really 'solve' congestion. But I suspect better transit will reduce it.

You're correct about the insolubility of car congestion--the role of transit isn't to reduce it (and it doesn't), but to give people a way around it; to make sitting in traffic OPTIONAL instead of mandatory
