As far as people calling for the abolition of cars--Idk how anyone takes them seriously, and wonder how many of them aren't just trying to shock or provoke. It's like depopulation advocacy. If you want to worry about them, be my guest--I have more tangible concerns to fret about.

Concerns like the opposition to a law that would allow more construction near train stations in California--opposition which is based on the premise that allowing more people to live near trains = confiscating cars. But hey--thank heavens they don't want to BAN trains!

Why people can't grasp "if most people are on trains, the highways become more free for the people who still want to drive" always baffles me.
-
Far better to have one lane of empty tarmac by the tracks than six lanes of crawling shitboxes, as far as I see it.
-
this x 1,000,000. MOST people despise driving if they were really honest, once they get over the initial excitement of learning. Cars are dirty, unhealthy, expensive, complicated to take care of, and a general pain in the ass.
-
I think it's more accurate to say they despise *needing* to drive...they very much enjoy the sort of driving which is just for fun
-
Yes, that would be more accurate. Although I think the # of people who drive for fun is a pretty small minority, comparatively. I wonder how much people's standard of living would increase, all other things being equal, if car was removed from equation.
-
Don't think of it as a subset of PEOPLE that drive for fun--it is a subset of TRIPS that are made for fun.
-
Taking a road trip, a day trip, driving around town w friends, etc etc
-
sure, I get what you're saying. We could parse it further. Some trips, the car itself is the point. I'm currently (literally, right now) working on a project on lowriders, so cruising is important. For others its the destination, and car is best/most fun way to get there

Yes. Most "ban cars" people take it lightly-they know it's difficult. Meanwhile. Kotkin and O'Toole rage whenever any zoning deregulation that makes transit sustainable financial is proposed
