I'm already well aware that Peter Pan blocks PVTA from operating direct Amherst-to-Springfield service, or service to Six Flags in Agawam, on the grounds that it's unreasonable to expect them to compete with an operator that doesn't need to earn a profit...

...I am skeptical that this argument holds any water (people pay more for higher quality buses and more direct trips, after all), but this recent news should clear up any ambiguity: it's not fear of a subsidized competition, rather, Peter Pan fears ANY competition.

It would be dishonest of me to put all the blame on Peter Pan, of course--they couldn't accomplish any of this without the cooperation of lawmakers--but it's too obvious that they want to lock this market down and extort whatever they can get away with from people using it.

They're using all available (legal, of course) channels right now to hamper or prevent expanded rail service between Boston and Springfield, too. Their anti-competitive attitude is bad for business, bad for residents, and bad for Massachusetts.

Shutting them down wouldn't help anyone, by the way--no, I think the better solution here is just to loosen up regulations on private transit providers. The easier it is to start, the more providers trying new ideas, etc, the better off riders--and the state--will be.

...and in case you're wondering what I think Peter Pan should do, it's pretty simple: consider getting into the train business! Why restrict yourselves to buses?
