82% of our budget already comes from taxes, and the downside of that approach is that at any point legislators or taxpayers can decide they'd rather put the money somewhere elsehttps://twitter.com/FARTRON/status/968164442633580550 …

wikipedia says you use first transit
-
Gotchu, I only deal with SATCo, VATCo, and UMTS, two of which are owned by FirstTransit (which is owned by FirstGroup, based in Aberdeen, UK)
-
But they only do what PVTA asks; we pay them, and so have control over operations
-
you don't negotiate the driver contracts or own the buses
-
But we set the hours and determine the routes, so...
-
so you've managed to maintain a bit of local, democratically accountable control, that's pretty cool and having a major state university probably helped
-
The university's garage is not (afaik) run by First Transit (it also pays its drivers way less, has no union that I know of, and only hires students)
-
yeah it's like that at a lot of schools, i meant that they guarantee both a middle class ridership and political attention that allows pvta to hold onto the power it has instead of being entirely privatized
