Just take a look at places like Beacon Hill or North End in Boston; they have streets just as narrow as the pics I'm posting but they still fit nicely into the larger Boston metro area--it wouldn't be too hard to imagine the style proliferating there, esp around subway stations
You could easily do this with one neighborhood, but I would say to start even smaller and start working on one lot at a time
