The same price will get you a more spacious apartment in Tokyo than in Los Angeles, Boston, San Francisco, or Manhattan (but not Chicago!)pic.twitter.com/El4JlFJQys

Reminder that most of what makes LA "spread out" isn't the houses, but the roads and parking lots--more space for cars than for people lmfao

I find this hard to believe. Does this include all of Tokyo-to? I really doubt this is true for the 23 special wards

I'm assuming this is for the 23 wards, also not that hard to believe

Rents in Japan are very low compared to major US cities, rent-per-square-meter is a bit closer to balanced (as you see here--only the most expensive cities are still being outdone)

As for plausibility of the 23 wards--remember that that includes places like Suginami and Setagaya, which are downright suburban (and account for a huge portion of the population and housing stock!)

That’s a good point. All the people I know in Tokyo pay about that for a way smaller space, but they live in more central areas. Smaller Japanese cities are certainly way cheaper than American ones

Moscow: 1/2m^2, also you share the apartment with the average of sixteen other renters
