just lol @ five colleges balking at increasing their contribution in the face of these service cuts..."why should we pay more for less?" idk guys ask our ordinary riders who are gonna be facing a fare hike alongside the service cuts

all routes operated out of the UMass garage are free for all passengers, the buses have no fareboxes installed. theoretically the lost fare revenue is paid by 5 colleges but in practice they grossly underpay the fare equivalent

the result is that bus service is free in affluent college towns like Amherst, but demands exact change in struggling post-industrial cities like Holyoke, Chicopee, Springfield, and Westfield (Northampton buses also require exact change but college kids can ride some free w ID)
