Not sure how up to date this map that I found is: https://www.google.com/maps/d/viewer?mid=14ME4a7PHhjwxKmflLHJFWsdhW08&hl=en_US&ll=34.027401765686676%2C-118.2345736228333&z=12 … If accurate, then this explains a lot...very little service at frequencies above 4/hour. A 15 minute wait is near the bottom threshhold of convenience, even here in Western MA we manage that!

The map shows a reasonably extensive network with service "at least" every 15 minutes, but in fact the bulk of services shown don't exceed it. Even their rail lines! Why go to all that trouble if you'll top out at 10 minute headways? C'mon, I don't want to be waiting more than 5!

To say nothing of that all-important disclaimer: "not necessarily evenings and weekends" You know, when everyone is going out and having fun...a timetable like this says "please drive drunk instead"

I will concede that it's difficult to get headways above 4/hr using buses in mixed traffic--variation in travel times ends up with bunching etc...the solution is to dedicate the ROW, either w bus lanes or by building rail, but if you avoid exceeding 4/hr even in dedicated ROW...

The push for frequent networks is important! Passengers hate waiting, and frequent service makes many more trips and combinations of trips easy--but BECAUSE it's important, we can't just pat ourselves on the back for achieving minimum qualifications! 4 per hour? MORE per hour!

At least as recently as 2015, LA had plans for dedicated ROWs and 5-minute headways in the busiest parts of the city...did the plans get scrapped? Approved but not yet implemented? http://media.metro.net/board/Items/2015/03_march/20150326othersectorbrcitem2.pdf …

This takes for granted that there's nothing deficient about the current system--notice a solid third of the trip time is waiting because frequencies don't exceed 4/hr. Toronto is lower density but has better transit and transit use, "spread out" not rly the issue

Route and stop locations could probably use a tweak too but I would need to know more about the city to judge that...in any case, my point is that the layout of LA isn't an insurmountable barrier to good transit there, and that what exists isn't good enough

Again, cities like Toronto can say the same re:grocery store access, but still manage much better than LA, despite much worse weather for walking in. I'm not here to say LA transit is good *now,* after all

You should get one of those Gordon Ramsey type shows where he goes to restaurants to fix them up, but for public transit systems.
