Don't listen to the detractors! Demand for rail service is there! People want trains that come frequently, not just a handful at peak hours and a skeleton service during the day...they want RAPID TRANSIT!

The crucial advantage of the Red Line isn't that it's faster than the commuter rail, but that it's more frequent, which means SHORT WAITS at the station--a factor that can't be beat! I would love to imagine that people also prefer it for the EMUs, but that's a bit of a leap...

To the extent, however, that EMUs facilitate tight headways in a way that locomotives do not--well, to that extent, people DO prefer them!
