Planning has its uses but responsiveness and adaptability strike me as way more important
The very *last* thing we do in America is build throwaway housing--are you thinking of Japan? Here, housing is expected to be an investment, and so affordable, disposable housing never shows up, leaving prices way too high for many

It's an investment but only on a 5 year "flip" time horizon. Nothing in the house is actually built to last. That people pay 500K for a badly built box with no windows on 2 out of 4 sides is nothing short of amazing, but people stomach it partly b/c of indefinite expectations

It's true we don't have housing designed to be torn down like in japan, but we also don't have houses built with the intent of keeping them in the family, or anything like that. They are "investments" in that they will be sold, not cared for, so there is no plan for care.
