if you're a single parent with a minimum wage job "respectable" housing is maybe an unrealistic standard--what's the point of providing subsidized housing if not exactly for struggling cases like this?

Ha. But the point is is that it used to be possible for a single-earner household earning at or just above minimum wage to live in an average 2-bed apartment for many parts of the country. it's no longer possible.
