2 earners, my whole point is that we were decently middle class but weren't demanding 5 bedrooms for 6 people

OF COURSE life will be impossibly hard if you're poor but expecting to live better than the middle class do

Ha. But the point is is that it used to be possible for a single-earner household earning at or just above minimum wage to live in an average 2-bed apartment for many parts of the country. it's no longer possible.
