If AVs get to the point where 1 second spacing between cars is normal, wonderful--I would still be surprised if they can exceed the capacity of running 11-car trains every 3 minutes in each direction

And of course, this isn't even getting into quadruple-track line capacity: the point is that for a given number of people in a given interval of time, trains will require much less ROW width to move them. Since space is a critical consideration in cities, this is a huge advantage
