There's nothing quite like seeing a thread full of people gloating about evading POP fare inspectors to remind me how stupid POP fare collection is
They don't use POP on buses either dude, just the same fare media they use on the trains

My point is that Japan's buses are not extremely high ridership, so slow fare payment is not as much of an issue
-
Tapping a suica isn't exactly slow payment
-
Even paying with cash is much faster than here because instead of feeding coins/bills one at a time, you can just dump all your coins in at once and the machine will read it
-
There is also the matter of most buses charging your fare when you *exit* instead of when you board, so boards are streamlined

Right, but buses in Tokyo are so slow that the city mostly gave up on them. So best industry practice is elsewhere.
-
There are an awful lot around (and a whole lot of operators) for a city that gave up on them
-
Toei has, what, a million daily bus riders? That's not a lot for how big the city is. Compare that with TfL, or SBS/SMRT.
-
I can't find annual bus ridership stats for Toei, so I'm not sure--but Toei isn't even the only bus provider in the 23 wards, let alone in the rest of the Tokyo area
-
Odakyu's fact book doesn't provide ridership for buses, but confirms that bus passengers account for about 6% of operating income--a worse farebox recovery than their trains, but still positive for every year listed (2012-present)
